If I am not mistaken, the combustion in a diesel occurs very rapidly - which gives it the trademark knocking sound. That is one reason they have to be built so tough to withstand the "hammer blow" on top of the piston (in addition to the high compression ratio)

A friend of mine recently got a flat on his tractor (ripped the valve stem off) and a good portion of his liquid ballast came out. He said it was diluted antifreeze. My thoughts were that it is irresponible for a dealer to fill his tires with antifreeze due to the health and environmental consequences of a spill. Is this a standard practice? Wouldn't calcium chloride be a safer ballast?

There is no 71" bucket available for the 790 (as far as I know). If you are quoted 20k for that setup, I would run for the hills. I paid $14,000 w/o tax for the same setup with a model 70 loader and 60" bucket.

Does anyone know if the JD790 is based on a previous JD model such as the 855 or 955 or a current or previous Yanmar model. Just curious... Also, does it have the aluminum axle housings that have been discussed. I tried a magnet and it stuck to the housing, but that may be the steel axle inside causing the attraction.Thanks.

The average modern automobile engine will go 200,000 miles or more and at an average speed of 50mph - this is 4000 hours. This includes 4 cylinder engines which probably have much higher piston speeds than a typical compact diesel engine. A Briggs and Stratton will go at least 1000 hours. I would think that if a Yanmar only went 2000 hours then Yanmar would not still be in business. I would guess most compact diesel engines are good for at least 5000 hours - your milage may vary:>

I have a 790 with a #70 JD loader w/ 60" bucket. Does anyone know if JD or the aftermarket manufacturers sells a toothbar for this bucket? Any recommendations?

I agree with Glenn. I have a 790 4wd and friends of mine recently purchased a TC40D and a Kubota 3010. Both are hydros and seem to be very capable machines. I do , however, feel the Boomer has too many gimmicks and gadgets on it that may affect its long term reliability. After driving those tractors and then getting back on mine it made me really appreciate the simplicity of the 790.

That's about 3K less than you would pay for an equivalent brand name (non- Chinese) tractor such as a JD790 or Kubota L2600DT. IMHO, 5 years from now, you will probably wished you had paid the extra money.....

I was looking at a TC33 the other day. I didn't actually measure it, but the rear axle appears to be much narrower than my 790. It also seems to have a higher CG. My 790 measures 60" outside to outside on the R4 rear tires.

Most guys around here charge by the hour - about $80. That is for a real backhoe, not a compact tractor.Since it will probabaly take you twice as long - if not more, you would have to charge at least 1/2 the price per hour. At that rate, it may not be worth your time and the wear and tear on your equipment.

The big question on the 4200-4700 is who makes the transmissions and rear axles - which seem to be a big source of problems. Of course, we know Dana made the famous front axle.

I thought two defective batteries was too much of a coincidence also. However, since the second battery was orders of magnitude worse than the first, I did some checking. It appears that the second one was way overfilled and the caps do not seal tight. With the battery sitting at a 10 deg angle, acid will drip out of the caps.

I will keep an eye on my charging system - just in case.

I have to disagree with the axle windup causing the hard shifting. The binding occurs in the transfer case, not in the transmission. Windup would make it difficult to shift from 4wd to 2wd but has no effect on the main transmission. I have tried this in my part-time 4wd truck and my 4wd JD790 - windup had no effect on changing gears.

It sound more like a clutch drag problem.

The diff lock on my 790 will not engage unless one tire is spinning. If I try otherwise, the lever does not move. I must maintain pressure on the lever until the tire rotate more and what feels like a pin is lined up with its hole in the lock (I don't know how it actually works, but it "feels" this way) . It has been like this since new. I never try to engage it if the tires are spinning fast. Usually, only at idle in first gear.

I paid $950 for an SQ600 w/ slip clutch. We have been cutting 2" material (and a stihl 026 :<) without any damage. It is a well made unit except the front rubber guard only lasted a month. Bushog says they do not make a chain replacement - my only complaint.

I am building an open shed supported on 6 telephone poles. The poles will stick out of the ground approximately 10ft. I want to bury them approximately 4 ft. in the ground for the lateral stbaility of the structure. I am considering buying a post hole digger for my 790 (25 pto HP) with a 12" auger. eDpending on the size of the poles, I may also try a 9" auger. Is this an unreasonable feat for the 790 or should I hire someone? Will the augers dig to 4ft? I will need the post hole digger in the future for much smaller diameter holes, so this is not a one time use.

Around here, the stone is delivered in single or tandem axle dump trucks. The drivers are pretty adept at dumping it pretty evenly along the whole driveway.

I had an idea (before I go my tractor) for uprooting 1" trees. I tied a snatch-n-strap from my Nissan 4x4 to the base of a 1" tree. After a few running starts, the tree came out.I decided it wasn't worth my time or the abuse on my truck to continue. For pines up to 2" diameter, I use my bushog. The stumps rot out within 6 months. For the other stuff, I am having trackloader come over next weekend to take care of it.

I called my dealer and John Deere regarding what I considered excessive corrosion in a short time on the battery of my 790. JD, of course, knew nothing about it. My dealer said it was happening to 790's on his lot but JD had not given him a solution. Last Friday, my dealer called and said to bring in my battery and he will replace it with a better one. Apparently, JD had contacted him and said they ARE having problems the 790 batteries and replacing it with a different model seems to fix it. I'll keep you guys posted.
